The Project Manager for Technical Projects is responsible for planning, executing, and finalizing technical projects onboard the ship according to strict deadlines and within budget. This includes acquiring resources, coordinating the efforts of team members and third-party contractors or consultants, and overseeing quality control throughout the project lifecycle. The role requires an understanding of ship systems, technical engineering, and project management principles. Additionally, the Project Manager must ensure all projects comply with maritime regulations and safety standards, adapting to the dynamic environment of cruise ship operations. Key areas of focus include, but are not limited to, ship technical systems and machinery, energy conservation, decarbonization initiatives, and environmental compliance.

Essential Functions:

  • Project Planning and Scope Definition: Define detailed specifications for work that needs to be performed, full-scale plan, goals, and deliverables in collaboration with Technical Operations Managers, Technical Directors, and other stakeholders.

  • Project Management: Manage schedules to ensure optimal performance, compliance, efficiency. Plan the execution of new system commissioning and ensure training for new systems is being provided before handover the new system to the vessel.

  • Resource and Budget Management: Estimate resources and participants needed to achieve project goals. Draft and submit CAPEX budget proposals, recommending changes as necessary.

  • Timeline and Milestone Management: Plan and schedule project timelines and milestones. Track project milestones and deliverables, and provide progress reports, proposals, requirements documentation, and presentations.

  • Stakeholder Communication and Management: Effectively communicate project expectations to team members, Technical Operations Managers, Technical Directors, and other stakeholders. Liaise with project stakeholders on an ongoing basis and continually manage project expectations.

  • Issue Resolution and Conflict Management: Proactively manage changes in project scope, identify potential risks, and devise contingency plans.

  • Project Evaluation and Continuous Improvement: Conduct project post-mortems, create recommendation reports, and develop best practices for project execution and management.

  • Compliance and Safety: Ensure all projects adhere to international maritime regulations, safety standards, and environmental guidelines. Conduct risk assessments and impact analyses to identify potential compliance issues and safety risks before project execution. Ensure that contractors executing the work are familiarized with the company’s policies and procedures.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Scope: The Project Manager for Technical Projects oversees the full lifecycle of technical initiatives onboard the ship, including planning, execution, and finalization. The role encompasses managing complex projects related to ship systems, machinery, energy conservation, decarbonization, and environmental compliance. Responsibilities include coordinating internal teams and external contractors, allocating resources effectively, maintaining schedules, controlling budgets, and ensuring adherence to maritime regulations and safety standards within the dynamic cruise ship environment.

  • Problem Solving: The Project Manager applies technical expertise and project management principles to address complex challenges in a highly dynamic maritime setting. This includes mitigating risks, resolving technical and logistical issues, adapting plans to operational constraints, and ensuring quality control throughout the project lifecycle. The role requires balancing competing priorities such as budget, timeline, technical feasibility, and regulatory compliance, while proactively identifying solutions to unforeseen challenges.

  • Impact: This role directly influences operational efficiency, safety, and environmental performance of the vessel. Successful project delivery ensures reliability and optimization of critical ship systems, supports sustainability goals such as energy conservation and decarbonization, and maintains compliance with stringent maritime regulations. The Project Manager’s work contributes to cost control, reduced downtime, enhanced safety for crew and guests, and alignment with corporate environmental and operational objectives.

  • Leadership: The Project Manager leads cross-functional teams, including shipboard personnel and third-party contractors, driving collaboration and accountability. The role requires clear communication, stakeholder alignment, and the ability to influence outcomes without direct authority. Leadership is demonstrated through effective coordination, decision-making, and fostering a culture of safety, quality, and continuous improvement while ensuring project goals are achieved on time and within budget.

Essential/Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree - Degree in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Naval Architecture,

  • Strong technical and analytical skills to ensure proper equipment selection, implementation, and operation; leadership and management ability to properly plan and execute 2+ projects simultaneously; strong time management skills to keep project(s) moving forward; strong communication skills as collaboration with multiple parties will be necessary; knowledgeable in maritime regulatory framework, rules and guidelines as they relate to air lubrication, marine systems, and hull structure; ability to work in constantly changing environment and to self-direct work.           

Essential experience required

  • 7+ in the maritime industry. Increasing responsibility throughout career with leadership role(s).

Travel25-50% with shipboard travel likely

Work Conditions: Work may require employee to work inside and/or outside with exposure to changing climate and/or operate machinery.

Physical Demands. Must be able to remain in a stationary position at a desk and/or computer for extended periods of time.

This position is classified as “in-office.”  As an in-office role, it requires employees to work from a designated Carnival office in South Florida Monday through Thursday each week. Employees may work from their homes on Fridays.  Candidates must be located in (or willing to relocate to) the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area.
