Department Summary

The Maritime Cyber Safety and IT Security Operations team within Global Cybersecurity Services is responsible for protecting Carnival Corporation’s operational technology (OT), enterprise IT systems, and critical digital services from cyber threats. The team ensures the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of shipboard, shoreside, and corporate environments through continuous monitoring, threat detection, incident response, and compliance activities.

By integrating IT security operations with maritime cyber safety, the team supports real-time security monitoring, vulnerability management, and coordinated response across both IT and OT domains. This work directly protects guest and crew safety, operational continuity, regulatory compliance, and the company’s reputation and financial stability.

Co-Op Project Summary

The intern will support both IT Security Operations and Maritime Cyber Safety initiatives, with a focus on strengthening operational readiness, regulatory alignment, and cyber resilience across IT and OT systems. Responsibilities will include assisting with security operations documentation, compliance tracking, and operational metrics that span enterprise IT environments, shipboard systems, and third-party vendors.

The intern will contribute to security operations workflows such as incident response documentation, vulnerability tracking, and audit preparation, while also supporting dashboards and reports that provide visibility into security and compliance KPIs. This role offers exposure to how IT security operations and OT cyber safety function together in a large, global enterprise.

Essential Functions (Key Responsibilities)

  • Research and analyze cybersecurity best practices across IT security operations and OT/maritime environments, including monitoring, detection, and response capabilities.

  • Assist in documenting and maintaining IT and OT security operational procedures, including incident response playbooks, escalation workflows, and compliance artifacts.

  • Support vulnerability management activities by helping track remediation status, risk acceptance, and reporting for both IT and OT assets.

  • Assist with third-party risk assessments, vendor security reviews, and compliance evidence collection related to IT services and maritime systems.

  • Contribute to the development of security operations dashboards, metrics, and reports, improving visibility into incidents, vulnerabilities, and compliance posture.

  • Support security awareness and training content related to IT security operations, cyber hygiene, and maritime cyber risks.

  • Collaborate with SOC analysts, IT infrastructure teams, and maritime technical stakeholders to help identify and address security gaps.

5. Learning Outcomes

By the end of the co‑op experience, the student will:

  • Gain hands-on exposure to IT Security Operations and Maritime Cyber Safety within a global enterprise environment.

  • Learn how security operations centers (SOCs) monitor, detect, and respond to cybersecurity threats across IT and OT systems.

  • Understand how international maritime regulations (e.g., IMO, ISM Code) and enterprise IT security frameworks influence operational cybersecurity practices.

  • Develop practical skills in incident documentation, vulnerability tracking, compliance reporting, and audit preparation.

  • Learn how security metrics and KPIs are used to measure operational effectiveness and cyber maturity.

  • Experience cross-functional collaboration between IT security, OT engineers, compliance teams, and third-party vendors.

6. Specific Qualifications

  • Pursuing a degree in cybersecurity, computer science, information technology, compliance, engineering, statistics, or a related field.

  • Interest in or foundational knowledge of IT security operations, such as incident response, monitoring, vulnerability management, or SOC processes.

  • Familiarity with cybersecurity frameworks or standards relevant to IT and OT environments (e.g., NIST Cybersecurity Framework, NIST 800-61, ISA/IEC 62443).

  • Strong analytical, documentation, and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.
