Key Details:

  • Hybrid Program: This co-op opportunity is a hybrid program based in Miami, Florida. Students must be available for the entire duration of the program and willing to work a hybrid schedule, combining both in-office and remote work. This is a full-time opportunity, with co-op students working 40 hours per week. While hours may vary, students can expect to work from 9 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday.
  • Eligibility: Juniors, seniors, and graduate students are preferred for the program.
  • Technical Requirements: Interns will be provided with a company-issued laptop and will need reliable internet when working remotely.

Project Introduction

Carnival Corporation is excited to announce a unique opportunity for Northeastern students to join our Health Services team as part of a workplace cohort program. This program will focus on health informatics and healthcare data analysis and modeling. Participants will engage in the entire data analysis process, from correctly gathering data, exploring and analyzing it, to transforming data and applying statistical modeling and machine learning to generate insights. Additionally, participants will create reports and visualizations to answer questions and provide insights that inform policy decisions. 
Carnival operates over 100 vessels, each equipped with medical centers staffed by physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, serving over 12,000,000 people annually worldwide. Facilities onboard include ICUs, Radiology, Point of Care testing and can perform many Emergency Medicine and Primary Care Level Services.

Expected Learning Opportunities

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to learn and gain experience in the health informatics process:

  1. Understand the Full Data Analysis Process:
    1. Learn to gather and define the needs of data analysis projects.
    2. Participate in data collection from various sources.
    3. Engage in data cleaning and exploration to ensure data quality and integrity.
  2. Data Transformation and Statistical Modeling:
    1. Gain experience in transforming data for analysis.
    2. Apply statistical modeling techniques, including linear regression, to interpret data and generate insights.
    3. Be able to validate statistical models
  3. Machine Learning:
    1. Explore and implement machine learning algorithms to enhance data analysis capabilities.
    2. Utilize tools such as Keras / Tensofrlow for developing and training machine learning models.
    3. Be able to apply and validate machine learning models
  4. Technical Skills Development:
    1. Work with Python libraries such as Pandas and NumPy for data manipulation and analysis.
    2. Use SQL for database querying and management.
    3. Apply Excel for data organization and preliminary analysis.
  5. Data Visualization and Reporting:
    1. Develop skills in data visualization using Power BI to create insightful and interactive dashboards.
    2. Learn to generate comprehensive reports that effectively communicate findings to stakeholders.
  6. Collaborative Projects:
    1. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support health informatics initiatives.
    2. Present findings and recommendations based on data analysis to stakeholders.

Desired Skillsets

We are seeking individuals with:

  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficiency in Python programming, with a strong understanding of data exploration and transformation using Pandas.
    • Knowledge of statistical analysis and machine learning using NumPy, Scikit-Learn, and Keras/TensorFlow if desired
    • Ability to query databases using SQL.
    • Understanding of Power BI for data visualization.
  • Personal Attributes:
    • Self-motivated and driven with a keen interest in the data analytics process to solve complex problems.
    • A proactive approach to learning and a willingness to embrace the dynamic nature of the healthcare industry.
    • Understanding of project management processes, including adhering to timelines and expectations of the analytical process
    • Fundamental understanding and experience with Microsoft DataVerse/PowerPlatforms is desired.
