Job Summary
As a Ship-to-Shore Technician, you will play a vital role in supporting the safe and efficient operation of vessels arriving and departing at the port. This position involves working on the dock to ensure the proper mooring, securing, and release of ships, while maintaining safety and operational standards. In addition to mooring responsibilities, the role will also involve performing general maintenance and support tasks as required to ensure overall port and equipment readiness.
Key Accountabilities/Job Functions
The Ship-to-Shore Technician is responsible for, but not limited to the following:
Docking and Undocking Operations
- Assist in safely docking and undocking cruise ships at port using mooring lines, ropes, and related equipment.
- Work in coordination with the ship’s captain, crew, and port authorities to ensure that vessels are safely secured and aligned with docking infrastructure.
Mooring Line Management:
- Handle and manage mooring lines, ensuring they are properly fastened, tense, and released.
- Perform visual inspection of mooring lines and related equipment regularly for wear and damage, ensuring everything is in safe working condition. (Regularly performed by ship crew)
Ship and Dock Safety
- Maintain safety protocols during mooring procedures, ensuring that all tasks are performed in accordance with safety regulations.
- Monitor weather conditions and report any changes that could affect docking or undocking procedures.
Communication and Coordination
- Communicate effectively with other team members on board and shore-based personnel.
- Work with the Port Authorities to ensure the timely and safe transfer of passengers and cargo.
Emergency Procedures
- Be trained to respond in case of an emergency during docking or undocking operations, including accidents or hazardous situations.
- Ensure all mooring operations are conducted efficiently and safely, even under adverse weather conditions or emergencies.
PPE Equipment (MANDATORY)
- Must always be in possession of steel toe boots (or prescribed non-slip safety shoes), safety vest, hard hat, gloves, radio/communication device. (To be provided by Carnival)
Cleaning & Maintenance of Pier & Mooring Equipment & Fixtures:
- Ensure all mooring equipment such as winches, ropes, and fenders are properly maintained and operational (through visual checks and inspections).
- Gangway Inspections & Maintenance: Inspect gangway components for wear, corrosion, proper tension, secure connections, and smooth operation to ensure safe pedestrian access and functionality.
- Fenders: Conduct visual inspections of pier fenders and associated hardware to identify cracks, deformation, excessive wear, or damage caused by vessel contact, and report deficiencies as needed.
- Mooring Bollards: Regularly inspect mooring bollards for structural integrity, including corrosion, cracks, loose anchor bolts, foundation stress, and coating condition, to ensure safe vessel mooring.
- Stanchions & Pier Fixtures: Inspect stanchions and associated components for corrosion, damage, misalignment, or instability, ensuring they remain secure and serviceable.
- Ropes: Inspect ropes for wear, fraying, or damage, and verify they are properly positioned and suitable for continued use.
- Mooring Equipment Maintenance: Perform minor maintenance and repairs of mooring equipment when necessary.
- Pier & Dock Cleaning: Maintain clean, safe, and non-slip pier surfaces by removing dirt, salt, algae, stains, debris and other buildup by pressure washing and using prescribed cleaning equipment and solutions, along all designated cruise pier and trestle areas.
- Cleaning Equipment Operation: Safely inspect, operate, and maintain cleaning equipment, including scrubbers and pressure washers, ensuring proper use, cleaning, and storage after each operation.
Additional Maintenance Support Activities
- Perform minor maintenance support to technical teams including plumbing, electrical, masonry, carpentry, and HVAC functions.
Mandatory Training:
- Maintain compliance with organizational requirements by attending and participating in all required company training sessions.
Lagoon Care
- Perform maintenance/inspections of lagoon systems.
Perform other duties as assigned.

HESS Responsibilities

Essential/Minimum qualfications
- Education: High School Diploma.
- Maintenance knowledge preferred.
- Certified Pool Operator (CPO) required within 6 months of employment start.
- Three to Five years' experience working in a moorning or associated fields.
Essential experience required
Must be physically fit. Must have strong customer service skills. Ability to work in an outdoor environment. Ability to multi-task and think critically. Previous work experience preferred. Prolonged periods standing and working outside. Must be able to lift, up to 50 pounds at times. All island employees must be physically able to participate in emergency lifesaving procedures and drills. Full use/range of motion of arms and legs as well as full visual, verbal and hearing abilities are required to receive and give instructions in the event of an emergency.Ability to read and write English to understand and interpret written procedures. This includes the ability to give and receive instructions in written and verbal forms and to effectively present information and respond to questions from guests, managers, and co-workers.
