A key member of the HESS organization at a Carnival Corporation owned and operated global destination, this position supervises day-to-day environmental compliance activities and leads a frontline team to ensure operational adherence to environmental protection standards. Responsibilities include monitoring regulatory requirements, conducting routine inspections, verifying preventive measures, and addressing non-conformities promptly. This position supports sustainability initiatives by implementing established programs, training team members on procedures, and reinforcing a culture of environmental responsibility through consistent oversight and coaching.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Waste Management and Pollution Control
- Oversee the environmental management of solid, hazardous, and special waste streams, ensuring proper segregation, recycling initiatives, and treatment processes in compliance with environmental regulations.
- Monitor wastewater quality parameters, maintain accurate records, and report findings to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and company sustainability standards. Collaborate in verifying laboratory analysis best practices.
- Lead pollution prevention, monitoring control programs, including management of emissions from generators, airborne particulate matter, noise, and other sources as defined in the Environmental Management Plan
Integrated Pest Management
- Oversee the implementation and monitoring of the Integrated Pest Management Plan
Team Management & Leadership
- Supervises direct reports by assigning tasks, monitoring performance, providing hands-on guidance, and ensuring adherence to established procedures and standards.
- Provide guidance and audit the other teams to ensure compliance.
- Coordinate and support “on-the-job training” efforts by working closely with area supervisors to develop, schedule, and deliver training sessions for all new team members.
- Support the development and delivery of educational programs for staff and other stakeholders on environmental stewardship and the port’s initiatives to protect and preserve natural resources.
Environmental Compliance & Reporting
- Support the HESS manager in the environmental reporting to local authorities and corporate.
- Collaborate with the HESS Manager to identify risks, monitor performance, and recommend corrective actions to maintain the environmental management system integrity and regulatory compliance
- Support the HESS Manager in implementing the Environmental Management Plan, including coordinating and conducting required environmental monitoring activities with external laboratories.
- Verify preventive maintenance activities related to environmental systems to ensure compliance with environmental protection standards
Sustainability
- Measure, track, and report sustainability performance, preparing reports and dashboards for internal stakeholders and external regulatory or certification bodies.
- Collaborate as required by the HESS manager in the engagement of stakeholders to foster a sustainability culture, awareness campaigns, training programs, and partnerships with suppliers, regulators, and community organizations to support long-term environmental and social goals.
Incident Reporting & Investigation
- Report any incident or failure related to the environment caused by ships or land operations to the HESS manager and support the root cause analysis process, corrective action and preventive action plans
- Maintain accurate records of all environmental incidents and related documentation.
- Develop action plans to resolve identified challenges during audits or inspections and actively contribute to decision-making processes to implement effective and sustainable solutions.
Emergency Preparedness & Response
- Develop and maintain environmental emergency response plans, including procedures for chemical spills, hazardous waste releases, fuel leaks, stormwater overflows, and natural disasters, in alignment with HESS policies, international standards (e.g., ISO 14001, MARPOL, EPA), local regulations and other applicable requirements.
- Coordinate with the safety supervisor for preparedness drills and simulations for environmental incidents (e.g., oil spill containment, wastewater discharge failure, waste management disruptions, extreme weather events) to validate readiness and ensure continuous improvement.
- Train staff and contractors on emergency response procedures, environmental protection responsibilities, and sustainable recovery practices to minimize long-term ecological impact.
- Collaborate with other HESS functions (health, safety, security) to ensure a holistic, cross-disciplinary approach to emergency preparedness and environmental protection.
Resource Efficiency
- Implement and monitor resource efficiency programs to reduce energy, water, and raw material consumption across operations, ensuring alignment with corporate sustainability goals and international standards (e.g., ISO 14001, ISO 50001).
- Conduct audits and data analysis to identify inefficiencies and opportunities for improvement, preparing reports and recommending sustainable practices that reduce operational costs and environmental footprint.
Other Functions
- Propose improvements and actively collaborate in the development and revision of HESS-related policies and procedures.
- Supervise projects with external companies involving improvements, repairs, or general maintenance of areas or equipment related to the environmental department, ensuring compliance with regulations and standards.
- Assist in administrative operations (schedules, permits, vacation, payroll, departmental software management, incident reporting, etc.) and perform other supervisory duties as directed by HESS Manager
- Maintain and analyze statistical reports and key indicators
- Ensure timely supervision and replenishment of operational inventory
- Comply with the company's established policies and procedures
- Assist in HESS related service visits from companies contracted
- Identify equipment or facility deficiencies and escalate maintenance requests
SKILLS SPECIFICS:
- Knowledge of environmental regulations and international standards such as ISO 14001, ISO 45001, MARPOL, EPA, and related frameworks.
- Proven ability to develop, implement, and monitor environmental programs including waste management, pollution prevention, and resource efficiency.
- Experience conducting environmental audits, inspections, and incident investigations with demonstrated follow-through on corrective and preventive actions.
- Analytical and reporting skills.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to engage teams and promote a culture of sustainability.

EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS:
- Formal degree preferred but not required. Applicants with extensive environmental management experience or recognized industry certifications (e.g., ISO 14001, NEBOSH, CEA) will be equally considered.
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience in environmental management, compliance, or sustainability roles, preferably within cruise, hospitality, port, or industrial operations.
- Minimum 1+ year of supervisory or team leadership experience.
LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to read and write English to understand and interpret written procedures. This includes the ability to give and receive instructions in written and verbal forms and to effectively present information and respond to questions from guests, managers, and co-workers.
- Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be physically fit.
- Ability to work in an outdoor environment as needed.
- May need to stand for long periods of time.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
