Job Description


The Boat Captain (Tender) is responsible for safely transporting passengers and cargo on boats or ships, ensuring adherence to all safety protocols and operational procedures at one or more Carnival Corporation owned and operated global destination. This role includes maintaining accurate counts and records of all passengers, crew, and cargo on board, as well as overseeing the secure loading and unloading of goods. The Boat Captain monitors vessel operations, navigates waterways, and ensures that all activities comply with maritime safety regulations. The position requires strong leadership, excellent navigation skills, attention to detail, and the ability to respond effectively in emergency situations to guarantee the safety and satisfaction of all passengers and cargo.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Vessel Operation and Maintenance

  • Ensure tenders are ready for operation every ship day.
  • Ensure main engine and generator maintenance is carried out per manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Ensure all service checks and weekly routine checks are carried out.
  • Conduct pre-checks of vessels, including engine oil/coolant/belts, engine room bilges, decks, seats, and consoles.
  • Ensure proper management, cleanliness, and upkeep of the vessel at all times.
  • Ensure all lines and riggings are in place and well maintained.
  • Ensure adequate life vests and firefighting equipment are on board and up to date.

Safety, Compliance, and Emergency Preparedness 

  • Always maintain the highest level of safety.
  • Conduct and carry out all safety, anchor, man overboard, and fire drills per procedure.
  • Ensure the gangways and bow ramps are in safe working order and properly manned during embarkation and disembarkation.
  • Log and immediately report any incidents involving injuries to guests or crew.
  • Ensure the vessel meets or exceeds all regulatory standards
  • Uphold environmental policies and procedures.

Crew Supervision and Communication 

  • Always conduct proper supervision of all crew.
  • Notify shore side security of vessel’s intent while entering and exiting the marina.
  • Notify the ship of vessel’s intent for embarking and disembarking passengers.
  • Maintain proper communication with ship staff, fleet management, and shore personnel as required.
  • Ensure current licenses are displayed on the bridge.
  • Be well-groomed and maintain company standards.

Administrative and Miscellaneous Duties 

  • Record and produce detailed daily logs.
  • Ensure tender pier and transitional base are clean and orderly.
  • Perform other responsible duties as requested by the Fleet Manager.
  • Maintain documentation of maintenance, safety checks, and regulatory compliance.

SKILLS SPECIFICS:

  • Knowledge of boat handling and navigation as well as safety precautions 
  • Ability to make quick decisions in an emergency
  • Experience operating boats of various sizes and types. 
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and procedures.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills. 
  • Follows maritime laws and standards 

EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s or bachelor’s degree Maritime Studies, Nautical Science, Marine Transportation, or equivalent experience is required; additional education in Hospitality or a related field is a plus 
  • Valid Captain License (Class A) 
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience as a Boat Captain Excellent navigation skills 

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be physically fit. 
  • Ability to work in an outdoor environment as needed.
  • May need to stand for long periods of time.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to multitask effectively. 
  • Detail orientated with a proactive approach to problem solving.
  • Ability to multi-task and think critically
  • Problem-solving and decision-making abilities
  • Strong planning and coordination skills, especially in handling multiple priorities under tight deadlines.
  • May be requested to work a shift schedule while at any of the destinations.
