Job Description


CSMART is currently looking for a Nautical Instructor for our Nautical Department for 40 hours per week, with a particular focus on delivering high-quality training programs, including the new OCP program, and supporting continuous improvement through simulation-based learning and updated procedures.

To achieve and maintain the agreed maritime standards, the role of the instructor is to expand their skill set to suit the training needs of the organization. Applicants must possess a high degree of self-motivation and a proven ability to work independently and as part of a team.

The role focuses on training provided to cruise ship officers. You will contribute by bringing your skills and knowledge to the training center and sharing this with the training department staff members.

As an Instructor (Nautical), you are an integral part of the CSMART team, where your key responsibilities will include, yet not be limited to: 

Key responsibilities:

  • Delivering training to shipboard nautical staff.
  • Delivering courses according to the CSMART course delivery process.
  • Acting as a representative of the corporate safety culture and promoting this attitude with candidates.
  • Developing and updating courses and procedures to be implemented onboard ships.
  • Keeping up to date with current practices, technology, Carnival procedures, and international regulations.
  • Liaising with the Operations Support team and other instructors to ensure everything is prepared prior to the start of courses.
  • Following up with underperforming and outstanding participant processes.
  • Managing equipment including simulators and addressing any deficiencies.
  • Staying abreast of the latest developments in teaching techniques and the use of simulators as a teaching aid.
  • Further studying the subject being taught to become a subject matter expert.
  • Staying updated on new technology, Carnival procedures, and international regulations related to the subject.
  • Reviewing relevant case studies for the subject being taught.
  • Understudying other courses at CSMART.
  • Visiting ships bi-annually to stay updated with ship operations with a focus on the subject being taught.

Requirements & Experience

  • Served as Senior 1st Officer, Safety Officer, or Staff Captain with extensive ship handling experience (podded vessel experience preferred).
  • Proven experience in the cruise industry; experience with Carnival Corporation brands highly preferred.
  • Analytical and structured thinker with strong problem-solving skills.
  • Experience in teaching/instructing would be an asset.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English.

Skills (Technical / Language / Personal Skills)

  • Proficient in Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and knowledgeable about computers and network software.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; able to effectively convey information.
  • Ability to navigate complex social dynamics and work well in multicultural team environments.
  • Demonstrates a growth mindset and passion for developing others.
  • Works well independently and as part of a team.
  • Open, engaged, and committed to continuous learning and improvement.
